Well, Memorial Day has come and gone--I was feeling incredibly rested and ready to work for about 12 hours, until another cold kicked in; now I'm groggy, medicated, and ready for a nap. Before I sleep, though, I want to curl up with a new book by the fine Chicago poet Quraysh Ali Lansana, called They Shall Run, a collection of what Lansana calls "Harriet Tubman poems." If you teach anything connected to Tubman, or to slavery and abolition, or to the dramatic monologue or poem-about-history, this is a book to know.
More on it later this afternoon, I hope!
